Art Curriculum
Intent
At Hormead, we recognise that everyone is a unique child of God with individual gifts and talents that need to be recognised and nurtured. Art at Hormead gives children every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learn about art and artists across cultures and through history. Our art curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to develop their confidence to experiment and create their own works of art.
Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work, and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.
In art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and show resilience. Art enables children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner and through exploration. All children are challenged in the art curriculum to reach their full potential. Art will also develop children’s individuality, allowing them to think and express themselves with confidence, equipping them with essential skills to live life in all its fullness.
We had a visit from an artist!
Jodie Cowler is a local fine line and tattoo artist. We learnt about the work she does and what she needed to do at school to become an artist. Jodie spent time in each class modelling the fundamentals of line art and teaching the children how to draw a bird from observational photographs. The children produced some beautiful sketches with pencil shades. After that, we created a gallery to show the children's amazing work.
